6422, OYSTER PRECISION, BLACK GILT RADIUM DIAL

Sold34mmStainless Steel

A ref. 6422 Oyster Precision in steel with a black gilt dial from the radium era. The printing is gold on glossy black, the kind of mirror finish that comes alive under any light. The hands and markers belong to the radium period, when Rolex lumed its dials with a material that has long since been retired. The 34mm Oyster case is time only, with a domed acrylic crystal that magnifies the gilt from every angle. Inside is a manual-wind Rolex calibre, wound by hand each morning. It came on an Oyster bracelet, the classic, honest choice for a 1950s Rolex.

Rolex patented the Oyster case in 1926, the first truly waterproof wristwatch case, and spent the following decades building a range around it. The Oyster Precision was the manual-wind side of that family, sitting alongside the automatic Perpetuals. The 6422 was produced in the 1950s, during the era of gilt dials and radium lume. These were the watches Rolex made for everyday life, without the complication or price of the sports models, built to the same Oyster standard. Today they are one of the most direct routes into mid-century Rolex.

Gilt dials are the reason people fall for vintage Rolex. Gold text on a glossy black surface, under a domed crystal, from the era before Rolex moved its dials to white print in the 1960s. Then there is the ritual of winding it every morning, a small daily connection that an automatic never gives you. At 34mm it sits low and neat on the wrist, the size every Rolex used to be. This is a 1950s Rolex in its purest form, a watch from the age of radium and gilt. Curated with intent.
