Sold42mmStainless Steel
A ref. 311.30.42.30.01.006, the Speedmaster Professional collectors call the Sapphire Sandwich. The name says it: sapphire crystal over the dial, sapphire display back over the movement. Through the front, the black dial is crisp and clean, with the three subdials and baton hands sitting under clear sapphire. Through the back you see the calibre 1863, the decorated, hand-wound chronograph that carried the modern Speedmaster for years. The 42mm asymmetric case keeps its crown guards and its black tachymeter bezel. It came to us on a steel bracelet, and every angle of it was meant to be looked at.
The Speedmaster Professional has been offered for decades with a Hesalite crystal, the acrylic that NASA favored because it would not shatter into shards in a cabin. Omega always offered alternatives for people on the ground, and the Sapphire Sandwich was the most direct of them. Produced from 2014, this reference paired a sapphire front with a sapphire caseback and the calibre 1863, the 1861's finished sibling with a display-ready look. It sat alongside the Hesalite Moonwatch as the version for people who wanted the optics of sapphire and a view of the movement. When Omega moved the line to the calibre 3861 in 2021, this generation closed out its run. The Sapphire Sandwich remains one of the cleanest ways to own the classic Moonwatch.
We sourced this watch for the clarity. Sapphire over the dial changes the way the Moonwatch reads, crisper and sharper, with less of the warm distortion Hesalite gives at the edges. Turn it over and the 1863 is right there, a hand-wound chronograph you get to wind every morning and watch work. Sapphire on both sides means the watch is built to be looked through, not just looked at. It keeps everything that makes a Speedmaster a Speedmaster while showing you how it all works. For the person who wants the Moonwatch and the movement both, this is the reference. Curated with intent.
