16030, DATEJUST, BUCKLEY DIAL

Sold36mmStainless Steel

A ref. 16030 Datejust in steel with the white Buckley dial. The Roman numerals are printed in black, and the four is written IIII in the old clockmaker's style, the detail that gives this dial its nickname. Small luminous dots sit at the chapter ring, and slim baton hands sweep over the white. The 36mm Oyster case wears an engine-turned bezel, its fine radial lines throwing light in every direction. Inside is calibre 3035, with a quickset date under a sapphire crystal and Cyclops. It came on a Jubilee bracelet, the bracelet Rolex designed for the Datejust.

The Datejust arrived in 1945 as the first self-winding wristwatch to show the date in a window at three o'clock. For years the date had to be advanced by winding through midnight, until the 16030 changed that around 1977 with calibre 3035 and a quickset date. It also brought a sapphire crystal to the steel Datejust. The reference ran into the late 1980s, bridging the classic 1603 and the modern Datejust. The Buckley dial belongs to this era, a printed Roman numeral layout that collectors now seek out by name.

It is all in the four. Rolex wrote it IIII instead of IV on this dial, the old watchmaking convention that balances the numerals across the face, and once you see it you cannot stop looking. The printed numerals are lighter and more graceful than applied markers, which gives the whole dial an almost dress watch feel. Then the engine-turned bezel and the Jubilee catch the light and remind you it is still a Datejust. This is the 16030 at its most charming, with the quickset and sapphire that make it easy to wear every day. Curated with intent.
