5500, AIR-KING, WHITE ROMAN DIAL
Sold34mmStainless Steel
A ref. 5500 Air-King in steel, fitted with a white Roman numeral dial from the ref. 1002 Oyster Perpetual. To be clear about what you are looking at: the dial is a 1002 dial, signed Oyster Perpetual without the Air-King name. The Roman numerals give the 34mm Oyster case a far more classical look than the usual Air-King batons. Under a domed acrylic crystal, it reads simple and balanced, time only, no date. Inside is the automatic movement that defines the 5500, a self-winding Rolex calibre in a case built to the Oyster standard. It came on a Jubilee bracelet, an elegant pairing for a watch this pared back.
The Air-King name dates to the 1940s, a tribute to the pilots of the Royal Air Force. The ref. 5500 arrived in 1957 and ran until 1989, when the 14000 took over, one of the longest production runs of any Rolex. Over the years it used calibres 1520 and 1530, and it shared its 34mm case and much of its DNA with the Oyster Perpetual 1002 of the same era. The two references were so close that Rolex itself commonly used 1002 stamped casebacks on Air-Kings. That kinship is why a 1002 dial sits so naturally in a 5500 case.
We like honesty in a watch, and this one wears its story openly. The 1002 Roman numeral dial turns a humble Air-King into something that looks like a small dress watch, and since the two references share a case, it fits like it was made for it. The Romans are the detail here: crisp, black, and far less common than the batons you usually see. On a Jubilee bracelet it becomes elegant in a way the Air-King rarely gets to be. It is a 34mm Rolex for someone who values proportion over hype. Curated with intent.
