214270, EXPLORER, BLACK DIAL
Sold39mmOystersteel (904L)
A Rolex Explorer, ref. 214270, in the later Mk2 configuration. The black dial carries the Explorer's signature 3, 6 and 9 Arabic numerals, here filled with luminescent material so they glow along with the hands and indices. The hands are lengthened to reach the minute track, finally in proportion with the 39mm case. The Oystersteel case pairs a smooth polished bezel with brushed lugs and a solid caseback. Inside is the calibre 3132, a self-winding movement fitted with a blue Parachrom hairspring and Paraflex shock absorbers. It is worn on the Oyster bracelet: simple to read, built to take punishment, and quietly beautiful.
Rolex introduced the Explorer in 1953, the year Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first to reach the summit of Everest. It was built as a tool watch for exploration, with a black dial, bold numerals and an Oyster case designed to survive hostile conditions. For decades the Explorer stayed at 36mm, and many collectors believed it never should change. In 2010, Rolex grew it to 39mm with ref. 214270. In 2016, the Mk2 update answered the main criticism of the first version by lengthening the hands and adding lume to the 3, 6 and 9. This is the version where the 39mm Explorer finally looked exactly right.
We sourced it because the Mk2 is the 214270 finished properly. On the first version, the hands stopped short of the markers and the numerals went dark at night. Rolex fixed both, and the result is a dial that reads cleanly in every light. Look at the 3, 6 and 9 after sundown and they glow alongside everything else, the whole dial lit as one. At 39mm it has the presence a modern wrist expects, yet it remains one of the most restrained watches Rolex makes. No date, no rotating bezel, no complication, just time told as clearly as possible. Curated with intent.
