1603, DATEJUST, BLACK DIAL

Sold36mmStainless Steel

A ref. 1603 Datejust in steel with a black dial and applied baton markers. The markers sit proud of the dial, catching light against the black, and the date window at three wears its Cyclops. An engine-turned bezel frames the 36mm Oyster case, adding texture to an otherwise restrained watch. Under a domed acrylic crystal, the dial has that soft, warm depth that sapphire never quite reproduces. Inside is one of Rolex's automatic calibres of the period, a non-quickset movement that advances the date through midnight. It came on an Oyster bracelet, which gives the 1603 a sportier stance than the usual Jubilee.

The 1603 was the Datejust of the 1960s and 1970s, produced for nearly two decades from around 1960. It carried forward the formula set in 1945: a self-winding Oyster with the date at three, magnified by the Cyclops lens Rolex added in the 1950s. Over its run the 1603 used calibres 1560 and later 1570, the latter adding a hacking seconds function. It was succeeded around 1977 by the 16030 and its quickset date. For many collectors, the 1603 is the classic vintage Datejust, the version with acrylic crystal and the original proportions.

A black dial changes the whole mood of a 1603. The applied batons give the dial depth, the engine-turned bezel adds just enough flash, and the domed acrylic crystal softens everything into that vintage glow. Putting it on an Oyster bracelet instead of a Jubilee changes its personality: less banker, more tool watch. It is a Datejust you could wear with jeans and nobody would call it fussy. This is the vintage Datejust with an edge. Curated with intent.
