14270, EXPLORER, BLACK DIAL
Sold36mmStainless Steel
A Rolex Explorer ref. 14270, black dial, 3-6-9 numerals, and nothing on it that does not need to be there. The 36mm Oyster case is the size the Explorer was always meant to be, slim and quick on the wrist. The applied numerals and markers are framed in white gold, catching light at angles that a printed dial never could. A sapphire crystal sits over it all, and inside runs the automatic calibre 3000. The smooth, polished bezel keeps the profile clean. It comes on an Oyster bracelet, exactly the way it was meant to be worn.
The Explorer name traces back to 1953 and the Himalayan expeditions that Rolex equipped, and the black 3-6-9 dial became the line's signature. The 14270 arrived in 1989 and modernized the formula: sapphire crystal, the calibre 3000, and applied white gold markers in place of the painted dials of the old ref. 1016. It was the bridge between the vintage Explorer and the modern one, produced until the 114270 replaced it at the start of the 2000s. Collectors have spent the years since rediscovering it. It is the Explorer that kept the 1016's proportions while gaining everything a daily watch needs.
Look at how the numerals are built. The 3, 6 and 9 are applied and outlined in white gold, so the dial has real depth, and it looks crisp in a way the older painted dials never did. Then look at the case: 36mm, no date, no cyclops, no rotating bezel, no excuses. The 14270 is the moment Rolex brought the Explorer into the sapphire era without letting it get bigger or louder. Few watches are this simple and this well proportioned. It is the Rolex for people who already know what they like. Curated with intent.
