Sold44.25mmBlack Ceramic
A ref. 311.92.44.51.01.003, the first Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon. The case is black zirconium oxide ceramic, and so is the dial, a glossy black field with applied white gold indexes that catch light like distant stars. The 44.25mm case is a broad canvas, and the black-on-black look gives it real presence without any extra color. Inside sits the calibre 9300, a co-axial, column-wheel automatic chronograph certified as a chronometer, visible through the display back. The subdials sit at three and nine with a date window at six. It came to us on a black textile strap.
Omega introduced the Dark Side of the Moon in 2013, and it changed what people thought a Speedmaster could be. Taking its name from the side of the moon that never faces Earth, the watch was a full black ceramic case, not just a ceramic bezel. Omega built the dial in ceramic as well, giving the watch a uniform black depth. It paired that look with the calibre 9300, the in-house co-axial chronograph Omega had developed for its modern sport watches. This reference was the first Dark Side of the Moon, and several variations followed it. It opened an entire line within the Speedmaster family.
We sourced this watch because it is the one that started it all. Black ceramic case, black ceramic dial, nothing in the way: it is a Speedmaster that gets its impact from a single color and a material that does not scratch easily. Look closer and you see the craft, the white gold indexes, the brushed and polished ceramic, the movement through the back. The 9300 inside means this is a modern Omega chronograph with a co-axial escapement and chronometer certification. Every Dark Side of the Moon that followed traces back to this reference. For a Speedmaster collector, owning the original says you were paying attention. Curated with intent.
