Sold42mmStainless Steel

An Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch ref. 311.33.42.30.01.001, in steel, on a black leather strap. The black dial carries three subdials and the tachymeter bezel that every Moonwatch wears. Over it sits a hesalite crystal, the same material used on the watches flown in space. The 42mm asymmetric case protects the pushers and crown. Inside is the manual-wind calibre 1861, a direct descendant of the movement that went to the Moon. Wind it each morning and it is ready.

NASA qualified the Speedmaster for spaceflight in 1965 after putting several chronographs through brutal testing, and on July 21, 1969, Buzz Aldrin wore one on the lunar surface. The Moonwatch has stayed recognizably the same ever since. In 1996 Omega introduced the calibre 1861, refining the earlier 861 while keeping the hand-wound chronograph architecture intact. This reference, with hesalite and the 1861, is the last generation before the 3861 arrived in 2021. It is the classic Moonwatch formula as it stood for a quarter century.

Hesalite is the detail. It is the crystal astronauts wore, it gives the dial a soft, slightly warm distortion at the edges, and sapphire simply does not look the same. Then the winding: the 1861 is a hand-wound chronograph, and every morning you turn the crown just like the astronauts did. The design has barely changed since the 1960s, because there was never any reason to change it. Few watches carry this much history while still being made essentially the same way. This is the Moonwatch, the way it should be. Curated with intent.
