Sold42mmStainless Steel
An Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch, ref. 311.30.42.30.01.005, with hesalite crystal and the hand-wound calibre 1861. The black dial carries the layout every watch lover knows by heart: three subdials, white baton hands, and a black tachymeter bezel framing it all. The steel case is 42mm with the asymmetrical shape that guards the crown and pushers. The hesalite crystal is domed and warm, the same material flight-qualified by NASA. Under the solid caseback, the 1861 is wound by hand every morning, which is exactly how a Moonwatch is meant to be lived with. It is worn on a steel bracelet.
In 1965, NASA put watches from several brands through a gauntlet of extreme temperature, shock, vacuum and humidity tests. The Speedmaster was the only one to pass, and in July 1969 Buzz Aldrin wore one on the surface of the moon. The calibre 861 arrived in 1968, and in 1996 Omega refined it into the calibre 1861, which powered the Speedmaster Professional for a quarter of a century. It was the movement inside the Moonwatch for an entire generation of collectors. In 2021, Omega replaced it with the Co-Axial calibre 3861, making the 1861 references the last of the traditional lineage. That gives this watch a clear place in the history of the Moonwatch.
We sourced this watch because it is the last of a line. The 1861 is a direct descendant of the movement that went to the moon, and once Omega moved to the 3861, the classic Moonwatch formula became a closed chapter. Wind the crown each morning and you are doing exactly what astronauts did with theirs. The hesalite gives the dial a soft, vintage depth that sapphire cannot imitate, with that gentle curve of distortion at the edges. On the steel bracelet it is the definitive daily Speedmaster. Collectors are already treating the 1861 generation the way they treat the 861: as the version they wish they had bought when they could. Curated with intent.
