145.012-67, SPEEDMASTER PROFESSIONAL, PRE-MOON

Sold42mmStainless Steel

A ref. 145.012-67, the Speedmaster Professional in its pre-Moon form. The black step dial does what flat dials cannot: the outer track drops a level, so light breaks across it and the subdials sit inside a shallow bowl. The lume has aged to a warm tone across the plots and hands, the kind of patina that only decades can paint. The asymmetric 42mm case wears its crown guards proudly, and the tachymeter bezel frames it all in a hard black ring. Inside sits the calibre 321, the column-wheel chronograph that Omega built its legend on. It came to us on a steel bracelet, and it wore like a tool that had somewhere to be.

The Speedmaster arrived in 1957 as a racing chronograph and became something else entirely when NASA put it through a punishing series of tests and qualified it for crewed flight. The 145.012 belongs to the closing chapter of the calibre 321 era, the movement inside the watches that flew through the Gemini and early Apollo years. Its case is the mature Speedmaster shape, with the asymmetric profile and crown guards that arrived in the mid sixties. The word Professional was already on the dial. What it does not yet carry is the moon on its caseback, because when this reference was made, nobody had landed there. That is why collectors call it pre-Moon, and why the label carries weight.

We sourced this watch for the 321. It is the calibre that powered the Speedmaster through its most important years, and when Omega later brought it back into production, the whole watch world paid attention. Then there is the step dial, which catches light on two planes and makes later flat dials look a little plain by comparison. The aged lume ties it together, warm against the black, honest about its years. Pre-Moon means this is the Speedmaster before the story was finished, built in the run-up to the landing that would define it. They will turn the watch over, see a caseback without the moon, and understand. Curated with intent.
