WSTA0054, TANK MUST, BURGUNDY DIAL

Sold33.7 x 25.5mmStainless Steel

A Cartier Tank Must, ref. WSTA0054, in the large model with a burgundy dial. The colour is the whole point: a deep, saturated wine red that fills the dial edge to edge, interrupted only by the Cartier signature and a pair of hands. There are no Roman numerals and no railway track here, just colour framed by the brancards of a steel Tank case. The crown carries Cartier's blue cabochon, a small jewel of contrast against all that red. Inside is a quartz movement, which keeps the case slim and the watch ready the moment you pick it up. It sits on a burgundy alligator-style strap that matches the dial tone for tone, and it was photographed with its Cartier box.

Louis Cartier designed the Tank in 1917, and the story goes that the shape came from looking down at the new armoured vehicles of the Western Front: two parallel brancards for the treads, a flat rectangle for the hull. It became one of the defining shapes of twentieth century design. In 1977, Cartier launched the Must de Cartier line, which brought the Tank to a wider audience and made bold monochrome dials in burgundy, navy and black part of its vocabulary. In 2021, Cartier relaunched the Tank Must in steel and returned to that idea, offering solid colour dials with nothing else on them. The WSTA0054 is the burgundy large model from that relaunch. It is a direct line back to the most daring decade in the Tank's history.

We sourced this one for the dial, because nothing else in the Tank family commits to a single colour like this. Most rectangular dress watches lean on numerals and minute tracks to look serious. This one takes all of that away and trusts the shape and the colour to carry it. The burgundy reads almost black indoors, then turns to red wine in sunlight. Put it next to a white Tank and the white one suddenly looks like it is trying too hard. The matching strap finishes the thought, so the whole watch reads as one deliberate object. Curated with intent.
