BGO41S, OCTO, STEEL

Sold41mmStainless Steel

A ref. BGO41S, the Bulgari Octo Solotempo in steel. The case is the whole story: a round bezel set into a faceted octagon, with brushed and polished surfaces alternating at every turn. The dark grey sunburst dial shifts from charcoal to slate as the light moves, with clean applied indices that keep the composition calm. Seen from the side, the profile is as architectural as the view from above. This one wears on a steel bracelet, which carries the faceted language of the case straight down the wrist. It is a watch that looks different from every angle, and it means to.

Bulgari launched the Octo in 2012, and its design traces back to the archives of Gérald Genta, the man behind some of the most famous steel sports watches ever drawn. Bulgari had acquired the Genta and Daniel Roth brands in 2000, and the Octo distilled Genta's octagonal thinking into a new, cleaner form. The name comes from the Italian for eight. The case was built with an extraordinary number of facets, more than a hundred, each finished by hand with alternating brushed and polished surfaces. The Solotempo was the straightforward time and date expression of the collection, and the line went on to become the platform for Bulgari's record breaking ultra thin Octo Finissimo watches.

We sourced it because the Octo case is one of the most complex shapes in modern watchmaking, and you can feel it under your fingertip. Count the facets and you lose track; turn it in the light and every one of them changes. That is Genta's DNA, but the Octo is not a retread of anything else he drew. The grey sunburst dial is the right choice here, quieter than black, so the case does the talking. On the steel bracelet it wears like a piece of architecture, Roman in its geometry, which suits a Roman jeweller. Nothing else in steel at this level looks quite like it. Curated with intent.
