3820, TYPE XX TRANSATLANTIQUE, BLACK DIAL

Sold39mmStainless Steel

A ref. 2763-1130-55, the Blancpain Léman Complete Calendar in steel. The black dial carries a full calendar laid out with restraint: day and month in twin windows beneath twelve, the date read by a slim pointer around the edge. A small seconds subdial adds a quiet rhythm at the bottom of the dial, and the 100-hour power reserve is noted right there in print, a promise made in plain sight. The Léman case is round, sporty in proportion and finished with care, more relaxed than a pure dress watch. It is a complicated watch that never feels fussy. This one wears on a black textile strap, which leans into the Léman's sporting side.

The Type XX was born in the 1950s as a military pilot's chronograph, supplied to the French Air Force and Naval Aviation. Its defining feature was the flyback, or retour en vol: one push of the reset button sends the running chronograph back to zero and immediately starts it again, saving precious seconds when timing successive legs of a flight. The originals are among the most sought after military chronographs in collecting. Breguet brought the Type XX back in the 1990s, offering the Aéronavale for military purists and the Transatlantique as its civilian sibling, with a date and a more refined finish. The name recalls Breguet's place in aviation history, including the Breguet aircraft that made the first Paris to New York crossing in 1930.

We sourced this watch for one button. Press the reset pusher while the chronograph is running and the hand snaps back to zero and sets off again in a single motion, exactly as it did for French military pilots in the 1950s. It is a genuinely useful complication, and it still feels mechanical magic every time. Then look at the caseband: the fluting that runs around it is a Breguet detail you will not find on a typical pilot's chronograph. The Transatlantique wraps all of that history in a civilian package that works with a suit as well as a flight jacket. It is the rare military chronograph that grew up without losing its edge. Curated with intent.
