Sold40mmStainless Steel
A Chopard L.U.C Sport 2000, ref. 168200-3001, in stainless steel at 40mm. The white dial is clean and generous, with plenty of open space around the hands and markers. Turn it over and the character changes entirely: through the exhibition caseback sits the in-house L.U.C calibre 4.96, an automatic micro-rotor movement certified as a chronometer by COSC. The small rotor is set into the movement rather than over it, so the finishing of the bridges stays on view. At 10mm thick, the case is slim for a sports watch. It is currently fitted to an aftermarket bracelet, with an aftermarket rubber deployant strap included as well.
Chopard was founded in 1860 by Louis-Ulysse Chopard in the Swiss Jura. In 1996 the company established its own manufacture in Fleurier to build movements in house, and named the line after its founder: L.U.C. Its first calibre, the 1.96, arrived in 1997 as a micro-rotor automatic with twin barrels and chronometer certification, a serious statement from a house better known for jewellery. The 4.96 followed as a smaller-diameter version of the same idea, which made it possible to put that movement into sportier cases. The L.U.C Sport 2000 placed it in a steel sports watch. It is the moment Chopard showed it could build a watch for collectors, not just clients.
We sourced it for the caseback. Underneath sits a true manufacture micro-rotor, the kind of movement usually reserved for the most rarefied corners of watchmaking, and Chopard built it from scratch in Fleurier. The micro-rotor keeps the movement thin and leaves the bridges uncovered, so you see the work instead of a spinning weight. From the front it is a clean, confident white-dial sports watch with real wrist presence at 40mm. From the back it is a piece of serious watchmaking that most people around you will never know is there. That gap between what you see and what you get is the whole appeal. Curated with intent.
